September in Dorset

Dorset Makers 2013

Here is September in Dorset and I love it. I love the light, with that lower angle. I love the freshness in the mornings and I love the sense of Harvest!

It is the month of the County Show, which clashes nicely with a new event Food Rocks in Lyme Regis (Mark Hix, Christine McFadden, Angela Hartnett and loads more), Sturminster Newton Cheese Festival to name a few. I have listed them all in the Events and Markets page but which to choose?

Another first this month is the World Garlic Eating Competition in Chideock. We host the World Nettle eating competition so why not.

I have to give a plug for The Bridport Hat Festival as well. It is a joy, and the teenager is hoping to go this year in her steampunk outfit. (Yes I had to look up steam punk too)

Our news this month, is that we are almost there with the ‘e commerce’ bit of the site. So if you are a Dorset Maker, Grower, Artist, silver smith, cheesemaker (to name a few) please get in touch. You can be on the Directory so people can find you, you could add in a direct link advert banner to your own e commerce site, or you could list and sell items directly through this site online.

With a name like The Dorset Shop it makes sense really. We would love to have you and I am sure you would love to be in time for (whisper) the Christmas Shopping.

’tis the season for preserve making. The plums are coming into season for jams. Sloe Gin or Vodka seemed very popular at the Gillingham and Shaftesbury Show last month, and it is really easy to make. How about

Pepper and Tomato relish with onion.

Pepper and Tomato relish with onion.

Hedgerow Jelly? Our Autumn fruiting raspberries are still producing but they rarely get as far as jam.

Check out the Farm Shops and Delis for ingredients.

It is also a great time of year for the artists and photographers. We had already had some spectacular sunsets and on sunny days the light is at an angle that highlights the contours and colours of the countryside. Expecting Colin Tracy to be out looking for those Autumn shots. If you want to be able to do that, why not try his Mindful Photography course.

You can find information on Farm Shops, events and photography courses on  out other pages, so please enjoy your visit.
